A weekend getaway to osoyoos

So this long weekend of canada day, I planned a trip to osoyoos and oliver - the wine capital of canada. And I enjoyed the trip to bits... I could only wish to have more days to spend in such a beautiful place. The trip was so random that I literally packed my bags the evening before we had to leave.

The hotel - Best Western Plus Sunrise Inn

While i was thinking of planning the trip the week before, literally all the places were sold out. I dropped the idea of trip until the day before, my dad called me that he just found one room in this hotel. I wished to stay at the watermark beach resort since I had heard a lot about it, but because they were sold out instead of dropping the trip altogether I decided to give this hotel a try as we would hardly be spending time in hotel. Getting that one room at Best Western Plus Sunrise Inn was the best decision I ever made. The room we booked was a suite – the only one available at that time at a fairly good price with our hotel.com rewards. We had a full sized kitchen with all utensils, fridge, oven and microwave. A full breakfast was free with room with a selection of juices, eggs, waffles and toast. The suite was good enough for 4-5 people.

Wineries to visit

  • Stone boat Pinot – Best for sparkling wine, Ice wine ( get extras of this … I love this personally, its very sweet almost like apple juice) and their Rose.
  • Desert Hills – They had a large collection of white and red wines. Chardonnay, pinot gris, merlot and gamay noir were the best.
  • Platinum bench – Honestly I went there for their breads and I am glad I did. Their goronzoloa and fig, Dble cream brie & pear was the best. I also bought their 2014 Merlot.
  • Lastella – I did not go here but it quite beautiful and picturesque spot from the outside.

Fruit picking

  • Hillside orchard – This was a very big farm with apricots, peaches, apples and cherries…. although during the june month only cherries were in harvest season.
  • But there were a large number of u-pick farms all over osoyoos and oliver as well.

Star gazing

Anarchist mountain lookout – 16 min drive from downtown osoyoos. If i had to pick one of the best experience out of the trip then i would say watch the milky way along with shooting stars on a clear sky day from the top of a mountain was amazing.

Beaches and lakes

Warmest lake of BC – Osoyoos lake … the lake is generally full of kids having fun and also pool floats can be used. Spotted lake – A lake that has visible spots due to the level of alkalinity in the water. The people there call it as medicinal lake. Here’s a great link if you are curious about the mystery of the lake.

Food

  • Boston pizza – Had amazing beach and mountain view on the outside patio seating. Next to water mark beach resort.
  • Roberto’s Gelato – Delicious gelatos to escape summer heat.
  • Jojo’s cafe – Suprisingly i could not spot starbucks in osoyoos but i did not try hard as i knew i had to try jojo’s cafe. Since the hotel had breakfast we only had coffee here and it was great. Must try breakfast as well since they have great options breakfast sandwiches ( But since I am vegeterian I could not spot anything on the menu to accomodate me.)

Planning the trip

The website called Inspirock was a great trip planner. Having an organized plan for the day on the trip is something I always try to do before hand so that I know exactly the places to visit and see when I reach the place and Inspirock helped me exactly in that. It had route planner and things to do option to add all the places and see the time to travel in between the places, a large map to see if your list of place to do does not turn out to be in opposite directions to maximize fun and minimize travel time. You can also rent a bicycle to roam around in the city but if you plan to go to oliver you might want to carry your bicycles on a car for the trip from osoyoos to oliver. Heatstroke cycle is a good place to rent bicycles in osoyoos just next to watermark beach resort.
